From 2132

"From 2132"

4D Foundation Year Final Submission

Roles: Editor/Voice Narrator

The story is about a time traveller who comes from a distant future where technology has advanced so rapidly that it has a mind of its own, entirely programmed by humans. WW3 was the cause of this because civilization all came to a consensus that human governance couldn’t be trusted anymore.

The protagonist starts by travelling back to Singapore in 1981, 150 years apart from the year she lives in. The reason why the scene starts out with her looking at the streets of Singapore is because I wanted to portray her being repulsed by the disorganized sight of the old shop houses in Singapore as compared to her society. As the protagonist continues with her travels, she finds out that despite the mess, people made do with whatever they had and were content with their lives. As she gets to know the society better, she reflects upon the differences that sets apart this society and the one she lives in.

The Process

The idea was to work with found footage and creating a narrative according to the editing of the footage. At first I was puzzled at how I was going to fit both the narrative and the footage together as the footage was merely a big compilation of the everyday life of Singaporean people. Thus, I edited the footage first before working on a narrative so I had something I could base it on. Initially, it was exciting because I thought that creating a narrative and putting found footage together would be a no-brainer process, but that wasn’t the case at all. It was a lot of work trying to fit the narrative together with the footage.

The process of creating the narrative itself was awfully tedious as I had to consider other factors like how the audience might relate to the narrative. For example, the first script that was come up with was something very literal, essentially like a story book. But then it felt like the narrative wasn’t compelling enough so I really had to brainstorm on how I could work around the script to make the narrative a bit more interesting.

I have never done something so heavily reliant on visuals in tandem with ambiguous dialogue, so it was an experimental process for me especially after realizing and learning so many things throughout. It made me realise that these types of filmmaking can be very complex and certainly not easy to pull off at all, as compared to scripting out a narrative and filming footages out of staged situations which is the more conventional method in filmmaking.
